AJ Subat (Chief Programs Officer)

Ajmal Subat is an artist, activist, and creative consultant. As a cofounder of Restore Her Voice, Ajmal helped coordinate the evacuation of some of Afghanistan’s most visible female leaders. A self-taught musician, he studied History and Theater at UCLA, as well as training in classical Northern Indian and Afghan ghazal with Ustad Naim Nazary and Ahmad Wali Khan. In 2003, Ajmal traveled throughout Afghanistan where he recognized the tragic and traumatic suppression of women and of the feminine voice and perspective. He has since focused on centering the voices of women refugees to foster psycho-spriritual, ecological, political and social healing and transformation.

Ajmal has composed for television and film, and self-produced his first album in 2012 with a second album currently in production. He has performed internationally, including on the inaugural Schools Not Prisons tour in 2016. Ajmal also offers creativity coaching to children using music, journaling, and other modes of expression. He has worked with software companies including MongoDB, GoodData, and Indicative Analytics, where he implemented innovative sales strategies and spearheaded outreach within the open-source community.
